Unity Partnership is responsible for designing the highways infrastructure and traffic flow. We ensure that the roads are safe, and we aim to improve the transport experience for all people travelling anywhere in Oldham, whether by public transport, car, bicycle or on foot.
We’ve improved the safety of Oldham’s roads with our highly-skilled road safety and casualty reduction teams who travel around the borough, interacting with local schools, community groups and the wider public.
Building on our work in educating children and young people in road safety, we’ve been awarded a £480,000 grant to extend this education initiative to vulnerable families. We’re using the grant to improve road safety in key areas across the borough through education, training and publicity for adults and children both as drivers and pedestrians.
We’ve also secured £22 million of funding from the Department of Transport for a major retaining wall improvement programme. Over the next three years, we will be rebuilding and repairing retaining walls using local, natural materials to modern engineering standards, ensuring their integrity for the next 125 years.
Our work is very responsive to public requests and encompasses often difficult areas such as congestion, parking, traffic signals and junction improvements. Our recent work in Shaw District Centre is a good example of the type of positive work we’re involved in. Here, money has been used to provide new pedestrian and traffic signage, parking improvements, pedestrian crossings and junction improvements creating a new, improved gateway to the centre.
