Traffic Management and Road Safety

The Traffic Management and Road Safety teams are primarily responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the highway network. This includes the management and movement of all traffic on the roads, and a commitment to help to cut the number of accident casualties by improving road safety.

The Traffic Management team manages the Council’s highway network by providing a full engineering service for traffic management throughout the borough. They work closely with the Greater Manchester Police to improve traffic flow and reduce the number of accidents.

Casualty Reduction interacts closely with local schools, community groups and the wider public to improve road safety through education. The team provides a Road Safety Education, Training and Publicity Service, including advising on School Travel Plans, as well as developing, managing and procuring an annual programme of local safety schemes.

The Casualty Reduction team work with Greater Manchester Transportation Unit (GMTU) which has developed a web based interactive map of road accidents. The map displays summary information for traffic accidents in the past 10 years and allows members of the public to view accidents in their locality. Basic traffic flow data is also included.
